Dafont – dafont is another nice site to find free fonts, they list over 10000 fonts, most of which are free to use for personal use on Windows and Mac OSX. Licensing terms are clearly marked above the download buttons.

Urban Fonts – Another site which lists over 8000 free fonts. The fonts are segregated into different easy to find categories, and can also be alphabetically browsed.

Font Reactor – Font Reactor lists freeware fonts in graffiti, gothic font, old English fonts etc. Most of the fonts are freeware, but there is no clear indication before downloading, so this adds to a bit of hassle.

Daily Free Font – Daily Free Font is a site that has over 4500 freeware fonts listed in its directory. The licensing terms for font usage is clearly marked.

Font Freak – Font Freak has a database of 5000 free fonts, they store a mix of both free and commercial fonts, so check the licensing before you download the fonts.

Simply The Best Fonts – This site lists thousands of free fonts in well segregated categories, the licensing if clearly marked, telling you whether a font is free or not.

Free-Fonts – This site is more like a search engine for fonts and lists over 55000 fonts in their database, the only problem with the site is that, there is no option to browse the fonts and you need to remember the names of the font to search for it.

Unzip the files you have downloaded, then follow the instruction for your OS:

Google Rilis Chrome Untuk Mac Dan Linux

Google baru saja mengumumkan rilis beta dari produk browsernya Google Chrome untuk platform Mac dan Linux. Namun sayangnya rilis engine Chromium ini ditujukan untuk para developer di Google Code dan bukan untuk end-user.

Hal ini disebabkan Google Chrome (dan Chromium) di versi Mac dan Linux masih belum sempurna dan masih dalam tahap pengembangan dan testing. Bahkan Google juga menyarankan kepada pengguna agar jangan dulu mengunduh dan menggunakan Google Chrome kecuali sudah siap untuk kecewa. Bahkan plugin Adobe Flash saja belum berjalan dengan baik.

Dengan dirilisnya kode Chromium ini ke publik (open source) maka setidaknya penantian untuk rilis Chrome di Mac dan linux tidak akan lama lagi. Meskipun masih banyak hal yang harus dikerjakan untuk Chrome, namun pengembangan untuk versi Mac dan Linux ini direncanakan memiliki beberapa fitur tambahan juga.

Juru bicara dari Google juga menyatakan bahwa pihaknya tidak ingin ada end-user yang mengalami crash atau efek lain dari versi unstable ini, namun jika anda tertarik untuk membantu mencoba Google Chrome dan juga siap menghadapi crash sana-sini, silahkan unduh dan coba.

Saya sih sudah mengunduhnya dan menginstallnya di Ubuntu Jaunty saya, dan untungnya sampai saat ini belum ada crash sama sekali. Masalahnya ya karena belum support Flash jadi agak repot kalau ingin menonton YouTube :D Saya sudah mencoba menggunakan Chrome di Gmail dan Twitter dan beberapa situs lain dengan extensive Javascript execution dan semuanya berjalan dengan lancar, bahkan postingan ini saya tulis diatas browser Chrome juga.

Dan seperti di versi Windows, Chrome ini memang salah satu browser paling cepat dan juga ringan. Namun ya saya baru menggunakan Chrome ini kurang lebih 1 jam, jadi mungkin belum bisa terlihat bug-bug itu di komputer saya.

iPhone exploit in the wild and stealing user data

Over the weekend news broke that a worm had started infecting Jailbroken iPhones in Australia. Nobody really took the exploit too seriously as all the 'ikee worm' did was change the phone wallpaper to a picture of 80's pop singer Rick Astley in a kind of warped tribute to the RickRolling Internet meme of last year.

However, I warned at the time that "as code variants continue to appear it is only a matter of time, and probably not that much of it, before a malicious party uses it to deliver a payload that is a whole lot more troublesome than Rick Astley" and my gloomy prediction has now borne fruit.

One researcher, Peter James of Mac security specialists Intego, has revealed that a new exploit is taking advantage of the same vulnerability that the ikee worm did, the often unchanged default SSH password of Jailbroken iPhones. iPhone/Privacy.A, as Intego have creatively named it, will allow hackers to "silently copy a treasure trove of user data from a compromised iPhone: e-mail, contacts, SMSs, calendars, photos, music files, videos, as well as any data recorded by any iPhone app".

The hacker would first need to install the tool onto a computer which would then scan for any Jailbroken iPhones connected to the networks it discovers, and assuming that the root password has not been changed it can then quietly go about its business. Although there is a chance of the thing being installed on a computer in shop, for example, and scanning for devices within range as people mill about, the actual overall risk is pretty low.

For a start it requires a Jailbroken device, either iPhone or iTouch, and it is estimated that something less than 10% have actually been modified in this way. Although this does mean a couple of million or so devices at risk, you also have to bear in mind that many of those who have gone through the Jailbreak process will be of a technical mindset. Exactly the people who read the newsfeeds, who frequent forums such as DaniWeb, who will be all to aware of ikee and the need to change the default SSH root password. All of the time the number of devices that are at risk is being reduced.

So perhaps the 75% of people who took part in a Sophos poll which asked if the ikee worm author had done iPhone users a favour by alerting them to a significant problem in a harmless way and agreed that he had were right after all. Better to get a grinning pop star on your iPhone as a wake up call to a vulnerability than have your data stolen right off the bat. That said, the ikee worm also alerted the bad guys to the vulnerability and it has not taken them long to get right out there and exploit it.

Personally I would have preferred it if the ikee chap had approached Apple with the discovery and let them get it patched before going public. That kind of disclosure is the responsible way to do it and, assuming that Apple acted quickly enough, the problem could have been corrected without any data stealing tools or faded singers being involved. Of course, Apple might say that if you breach the terms and conditions of usage of your hardware device by modifying it in this way then you deserve everything you get.

Certainly, as far as the Apple campaign against Jailbreaking goes this kind of bad publicity is actually pretty good for the company. It can, quite rightly, proclaim that legitimate users have nothing to fear and warn that the security risk is just one more reason that they should not be tempted down the Jailbreak road.

That said, some researchers are also warning that non-Jailbroken iPhones could be compromised if the bad guys look away from this particular access route and start exploiting other avenues such as the SMS hacking trick revealed at Black Hat earlier in the year.

Google Tries Transparency with New Dashboard

Google released an exciting new product today called the Dashboard. I don't usually call Google products exciting because it makes me sound like I'm writing their marketing literature, but the Dashboard provides a way to see an overview of all your activity across every Google product you use. And if you're like me, that's a lot. Instead of guessing what information Google has, you can now see it all in one convenient place.

Getting To The Dashboard

Accessing the dashboard is a simple matter. Follow these steps:

1. Go to Google.com.
2. Click Settings > Google Account Settings and your account page opens.
3. At the top of the page in the right column labeled Personal Settings, click View Data Stored with Account (next to the Dashboard label). The Google Accounts page opens with all of the information across each of your Google accounts.

Why It's Great

I always loved that quote at the top of this post from Google CEO, Eric Schmidt above. It suggests that for some reason we should just trust Google with our data. It's an absurd notion of course, and even more so in that ridiculous quote, but Google Dashboard is a good first step. It gives users a one-stop shop to see all of their data and settings.

As individuals interested in accessing and understanding data, this is a huge step forward. For businesses, it's even more important, especially from a regulatory and compliance point of view. It gives everyone, big or small, access to their data in a simple fashion, which is as it should be.

Google's Free Tools Are Attractive and Scary

When I saw Marissa Mayer's presentation recently on the Google's new social search, one thing jumped out at me. You have to give Google information about your social networks in order for the search engine to display social search results. This seemed like a huge thing to ask users, and it goes directly to the heart of the problem many people have with Google. Yes, the tools are wonderful and free and available wherever you go, but any thinking person has to wonder about the portfolio of information that Google has on each of us -- our mail, our search history, what we read and the pictures we take, the videos we watch and the ones we add, and on and on it goes. And the social search would mean Google would have access to our friends too (whom we associate with).

All of this is a bit scary, so you'll have to pardon me if I don't trust Eric Schmidt's assertion that they won't ever step into that "evil room." But for starters, the Dashboard at least gives us insight into what information that Google has on us its databases, and gives us the opportunity to change our privacy settings and to delete services we don't want anymore. It may not be a panacea for paranoia, but it's a start, and I'll take it.

Have you searched for Linux distributions that are 100% free? Did you find more than one that suited your needs? Well, here's a list of nine from which you can choose your favorite. Free means freedom to alter, redistribute, sell or release as a different product with no restrictions on you or your new distribution.

1. BLAG - Blag is an operating system. Blag has a suite of graphics, internet, audio, video, office, and peer to peer file sharing applications. Based on Fedora, Blag has just about everything you'd ever need for productivity and fun.

2. Dragora - Dragora is an independent distribution of GNU/linux based on the concept of the simplicity. It aims to be a multipurpose, stable and powerful operating system while maintaining the simplicity of Unix. The initial release of Dragora was June 13, 2008. Dragora GNU/Linux 1.1 was released October 8, 2009.

3. Dynebolic - A GNU/Linux distro that focuses on audio/video production with a host of applications such as Jack, SuperCollider, Csound, Fluxus and of course Pure Data with a great collection of externals (PDP, PiDiP, Gem, GridFlow, RRadical, PixelTango).

4. gNewSense - a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian and Ubuntu, with sponsorship from the FSF. This is the distribution that Richard Stallman himself uses--so you know it's good because he could use any of them.

5. Kongoni - Kongoni is the Shona word for a Gnu (also known as a Wildebeast) the animal which inspired the name of the GNU operating system. The name represents the spirit and history of Kongoni, a GNU/Linux operating system of African origin. Kongoni is a desktop-oriented operating system with a strong belief in being truly free software. This means that Kongoni will neither include nor ship any software not under a license approved by the Free Software Foundation.

6. Musix GNU+Linux - Based on Knoppix and oriented toward audio production, Musix contains a giant repository of free software. Don't let the website fool you; Musix is available in a variety of languages including English.

7. Trisquel GNU/Linux - Based on Ubuntu, with all proprietary and non-free software removed, Trisquel is a free and easy to use operating system with multi-language support.

8. Ututo - The first fully free distribution recognized by the GNU Project. This one is Gentoo based and is actively developed in Argentina.

9. Venenux - VENENUX GNU/Linux is a free/libre operating system primarily for people in Ibero-America. It aims to cover the needs of any type of user, with software for almost every necessity while remaining fast and easy to install. VENENUX is the fruit of the work of a group of people of different Hispanic countries.

There are a few distributions that come close to free but still contain non-free and proprietary software, allow you to install non-free software or advertise non-free software during the installation process. My 5 Favorite Free iPhone Apps

One of the great things about the iPhone is of course the App Store, which is a growing eco system of interesting applications. I tend to stick to the free ones, and not long ago I went and downloaded a bunch of new freebies. These are my favorites from that bunch:

Louvre

This is one cool app for art lovers. It opens to a picture of the outside of the Louvre with famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) glass pyramid, then displays a cover flow with the different parts of the app. You can explore Louvre artwork, take a tour, or explore rooms inside the museum. It's amazing, comprehensive and the navigation is elegant and simple. You can even bookmark favorite places, so you can find your way back easily.

Nasa

If you want to keep up with news from Nasa, this app is a must-have for Nasa fans. It has information on missions and includes images and educational video. For instance, this month it features a video on the Crab Nebula, which is visible in the November sky using a telescope. Like the Louvre app, it's fun and educational, but it also is a very smart move by Nasa because it lets people know what they're doing with our tax dollars (and a lot of it is pretty neat, let me tell you).

ESPN Score Center

I don't know how I missed this one before because it's an essential application for any (American) sports fan. It takes a while to load the first time you open it (I mean several minutes), but once it's ready to go, you can customize the interface to include only the sports you're interested in. What's more, you can define your favorite teams, so they appear prominently at the top of the list of the scores. It also has a ticker with the latest sports news (like you see on ESPN Sports Center) at the bottom of the screen. You cycle through the different sports by dragging across the screen to reveal the next page (in a similar fashion to the Weather app when you add multiple cities). The navigation is not quite as elegant as some of the others, but it's very useful for keeping up with the latest sports news.

The Weather Channel

The standard iPhone Weather app gives you temperature and a general forecast, but if you want a more detailed weather picture, this app is for you. The first time you load it, it asks if it can find your location and then customizes the weather for your location without having to enter any information. You can see the current weather details, an hourly, 36 hour or 10 day forecast. What's more you can view the weather map, video and severe weather alerts for your area.

Yelp

I've been using the Around Me app to find restaurants, but a friend recently recommended Yelp and it offers a similar functionality, but with the user reviews front and center. Once again, it asks to find your location so you can use it wherever you are, then click one of the selections such as Restaurants to find the ones in your vicinity. You can filter by distance, price and whether it's open. I would also like to filter by restaurant type and which ones reviewers liked best (number of stars), but in spite of these limitations, it provides a good starting point for finding food or other stores in an area. Also includes a "Talk" client where you can post questions to people who happen to be online.

Firefox 3.5 has arrived, and according to Mozilla Foundation developers, its major advantage is speed. The new version of the open source Web browser is the first generally available release to include the TraceMonkey accelerated JavaScript engine, which previously had been found only in the 3.1 betas.

This move is the latest volley in the rejuvenated browser wars, as browser vendors shift their focus toward improving the performance of Web-based applications. Google set the pace when it shipped Chrome with a high-performance JavaScript engine last year. Since then, Opera and Apple have both announced new JavaScript engines for their respective browsers, and even Microsoft has grudgingly worked to optimize IE8.

But browser performance isn't everything. Users experienced delays browsing major news sites in the wake of the death of pop star Michael Jackson last week, but the problem there wasn't slow browsers or even overloaded servers. According to Web monitoring company Keynote Systems, in many cases site slowdowns were caused by ad networks and other third-party content providers, whose own networks couldn't handle the increased traffic.

This incident underscores an issue of growing concern to Web developers. Modern Web apps typically draw from multiple content sources, data stores, and services, and growing interest in cloud computing will only accelerate this trend. But given all these interdependencies, can Web developers really guarantee fast, responsive user experiences? Or as the complexity of our applications continues to grow, is application performance gradually slipping out of our fingers? Are we all just throwing ourselves on the mercy of the Internet?

Web developers' cloud conundrum
Making Web pages is easy, but building efficient Web applications can be deceptively tricky. Desktop software is tangible; as a developer, you can get your hands around it. To optimize its performance, you do things like eliminating memory leaks and improving the efficiency of disk access. None of this applies to Web apps, however, where developers rely on browsers to handle local resources efficiently.

Instead, Web developers are confronted with the vagaries of the network. If a user accesses a Web page that draws images from a third-party provider, the overall user experience depends on the user's browser, the user's data connection, the outgoing pipe from the Web server, the Web application software, the pipe between the Web server and the image provider, and the image provider's server software. A Web application developer is in a position to optimize only one of these.

Consider what else developers take for granted in this distributed, cloud-based model. How can you be sure that the third-party image provider takes security seriously? How can you be sure that its systems are sufficiently redundant, and that it makes backups regularly, so you won't be blindsided by any unexpected outage? You can ask, of course.

A more immediate problem lies in the ways in which external services integrate with Web pages. Most of them rely on external JavaScript, iframes, or both. Either of these techniques can block a page's onLoad event, a major factor in the user's perception site slowness. This bottleneck happens before the JavaScript code executes, so the speed of the browser's JavaScript engine makes little difference. Combine this design with an overburdened network, and it's not just third-party content but your entire application that suffers.

Increased complexity leads to increased risk for Web apps
The Web community is working on ways to mitigate these problems. For example, modern browsers load other content elements while they're waiting for JavaScript to execute, and developers have come up with various clever techniques to eliminate script bottlenecks. But these one-sided optimizations can only get you so far, and they're difficult to do right.

"Think about it," says Steve Souter, a performance evangelist at Google and author of the books "High Performance Web Sites" and "Even Faster Web Sites." He adds, "We're taking a chunk of HTML that might also include CSS, JavaScript, and Flash, and stuffing it into another page ... It's not surprising that they can, and do, significantly degrade the performance of Web pages, and in some cases can cause a Web site to fail entirely."

Part of the problem lies in the fact that such content-integration efforts often lack cohesive management and oversight. "Integrating third-party content into a Web page would be a complex project to pull off for two teams working in the same company," Souter says. "In the case of ads, the two teams work at two different companies. In fact, the developers creating the ad probably never interact with the team building the main Web site."

That's not to say that everyone will share the responsibility for site slowdowns, however. Rest assured that when site performance degrades, the user will place the blame squarely on the site's own brand: The external content providers will remain virtually anonymous.

Baby steps toward the Web as a first-class app platform
For now, Web application developers and architects should be sure to educate themselves about the potential bottlenecks and other pitfalls inherent in distributed, cloud-like Web applications. Souter's books are a good place to start, and Google has recently launched a Web site dedicated to developing best practices for JavaScript performance.

In the long run, however, Web services providers and consumers will need to work together to develop standards of practice for the cloud-based Internet. The Interactive Advertising Bureau has formed a working group and offers best practices for ad providers to improve load times. This is a good start, but clearly there's still much more work to be done.

One of the more troubling aspects of the current situation is that it tends to favor larger customers. Wal-Mart or a major sports league might be in a position to demand comprehensive SLAs and developer accountability of their external content providers, but a struggling newspaper publisher might not -- to say nothing of even smaller clients.

That's why it's of critical importance that the Web community work to increase not just browser performance, but the performance of cross-organizational Web development teams. As sites and services become increasingly interconnected, we need to come up with new ways to communicate, collaborate, and cooperate to make distributed, cross-site development efforts run more smoothly. Only in this way will the cloud-based Web flourish into a reliable, first-class application development platform.

Cloud computing made real

Chrome OS must be a dream come true for Google-versus-Microsoft fanboys. Rumors that Google would ship a desktop OS first flew back in 2006, but the project in question turned out to be for internal use only. Then came Android, and reports that Google's smartphone OS would soon make the leap to more traditional PCs set the market abuzz again -- although many remained skeptical. Now the announcement of Chrome OS should brush any lingering doubts aside.

Not everyone is impressed with the search giant's latest move, however. My colleague Randall Kennedy says Chrome OS has "an ice cube's chance in Hell" of competing successfully with Windows or Mac OS X, citing the overwhelming effort needed to duplicate the full range of device drivers and applications available on those platforms today. Randall just doesn't see that happening, and for that matter neither do I.

But Chrome OS isn't meant to be a pound-for-pound competitor to Windows. Though it's built on the Linux kernel, it's really something brand new. In fact, when we look back 10 years from now, the debut of Google's Chrome OS may well mark the moment when cloud computing finally became real.

Chrome OS: Custom-built for the cloud
It's particularly telling that Chrome OS will ship with support for both Intel and ARM processors. Google reps say the OS will initially target netbooks, and low-powered ARM chips are expected to play an increasing role in that market.

Even more interesting, however, is the revelation that the heart of the Chrome OS user experience is Google's Chrome browser -- and that booting a Chrome OS device should get you "onto the Web in seconds," according to the search giant's press release. In fact, the browser may be the only traditional application that runs on Chrome OS. Quoth the release: "For application developers, the Web is the platform" (emphasis mine).

This sounds an awful lot like the type of device I've talked about before, which I've dubbed "the Invisible PC." Rather than the traditional desktop model of applications running on a monolithic OS, in this new mode of computing the PC will all but disappear, leaving little more than a window to the Web. Desktop applications will be replaced by Web-based services, with computation and storage handled in the cloud.

It's fair to be skeptical, but don't underestimate the extent to which Web applications have already supplanted desktop software. Enterprises have been slow to adopt Web-based alternatives (and with good reason), but individual users have embraced them wholeheartedly. Remember when you had to install a special client program to read your e-mail? My mom doesn't. To her, e-mail is synonymous with Web-based services such as Gmail, MSN, and Yahoo Mail. Expect more categories of applications to go this way as Web technologies continue to mature.

Google isn't alone in pursuing the Invisible PC market, either. You could argue that devices like Nokia's Internet Tablet and the iPod Touch were the pioneers in this category, and Palm's WebOS shares Google's philosophy of Web-based application development. But Chrome OS promises a number of advantages that make it an ideal fit for today's lightweight netbooks and beyond.

The engine beneath the Chrome
For starters, Chrome is arguably the most technologically advanced browser in the world. Its multiprocess design, where each session exists independently from the others, more closely resembles a traditional OS than it does any other current browser, and its security model can't be beat. What's more, Chrome includes support for Google Gears, which gives it an advantage when Internet access is spotty.

As I mentioned before, Chrome OS runs on a Linux kernel, but that will hardly be relevant to application developers. Apps will be Web-based, but because the Chrome browser was designed with desktop PCs in mind, developers won't be limited to the stripped-down capabilities available in most smartphones and other devices. Google is one of the biggest advocates of the forthcoming HTML 5 specification, portions of which have already made their way into current-generation browsers, including Chrome. (And if you want to get an idea of the kind of applications made possible by HTML 5, look no further than Mozilla Bespin.)

Because Chrome OS is based on the open source Linux kernel, however -- and Google plans to open source the higher-level bits later this year -- the community will be free to lend a hand patching bugs and fixing security vulnerabilities as they appear.

Death to the desktop?
And there's more. Between the kernel and the Chrome interface, Google says it has developed "a new window manager" to handle rendering the GUI. Details are still scant, but from the sound of it, Google has opted to skip Gnome and KDE, and possibly even toss out the venerable X Window Manager itself. If so, Chrome OS is definitely not just another desktop Linux distro. In fact, it might not even qualify as a desktop OS at all.

How so? Consider how bloated mainstream desktops have become over the years. Whether your choice is Linux, Mac OS X, or Windows, your desktop greets you with countless menus, configuration panels, and applications, ranging from simple Internet clients to full-blown multimedia suites. Google's vision is different. "Google Chrome OS," Google's press release explains, "is being created for people who spend most of their time on the Web." If that's the case, then an old-style desktop is total overkill.

If your applications are Web-based, you don't need a software installer. Similarly, if all your data is stored in the cloud, the need for a full-featured file manager diminishes significantly, and you certainly won't need one of those fancy desktop search engines that are so much in vogue lately. You also won't need a backup manager, a disk defragmenter, a virus scanner, or a file-compression program. In fact, you probably don't need a desktop at all. What you'd really want is a lean, fast, responsive, simple UI -- something like you'd expect in a consumer electronics device -- and if Google is thinking like I'm thinking, expect Chrome OS to deliver just that.

Of course, we won't know what Chrome OS is really like until more details emerge later this year. But if it really is all that I think it could be, Chrome OS will bring changes to the PC market that have been a long time coming. We have a name for that: evolution.

There are some technical requirements you need to meet in order to be accepted, Barry Schwartz covers them excellently.
Secondly, you actually have to run a news website then make a ‘request’ for acceptance, according to Google News’ Daniel Meredith. I do recall Danny Sullivan stating that Search Engine Land was included automatically without him having to do anything though.
Meredith also stated that the main things the team looks for before including a site are:

* Original content
* Multiple Authors
* Proper Attribution
* Response time (website speed)

You may need to request to be included multiple times which was the case of Search Engine Roundtable and is probably the same for most publications. I was quite surprised about the fact that numbers need to be in a URL which you will find in the technical requirements.

Paid Press Release:

Thankfully, just because you don’t write a daily news source, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be indexed in Google news.Multiple websites such as PRWeb allow you to send out a paid press release that is likely to be picked up by the news source (and others) and get as many eyeballs as possible on your content.Make sure your press release has main keywords in the title and also includes them in the copy. Theres some other great information about this over at Web Pro News.While I’m not saying you should buy a press release about the term Facebook, it is interesting to note the volume of traffic the blended results are sending to individual articles. Can you think of any other high volume keywords that have blended news results near the top of the listing?.

A successful plan to drive traffic will encompass many different angles. If you are planning to drive traffic to a business related site, remember that it will take time. Unless you have a very large budget it is impossible to drive traffic over night and even if you did this traffic would not be sustainable.

HOW DO I GET TRAFFIC TO MY SITE?

Many people think that having a good website is all you need to get tons of visitors. Wrong answer. Getting traffic to your site takes hard work and diligence and is not accomplished overnight. Think about it this way - how are people supposed to know where to find your site if you don't tell them? You must advertise. Here are some proven ways to advertise your site without spending [much] money:

1. Submit your site to as many search engines as you can. Here are some of the popular ones you can start with:

2. Use a favicon.ico - see below.

4. Have Dynamic content on your site - Message Board, Links Directory, Guest Book, Online Search, Picture Gallery, Quote of the day, News items, Site Search, Links Engine ... It all makes for a more enjoyable experience for your visitors ... and happy visitors come back.
5. Make sure you don't have broken links on your site! There is nothing more annoying when one clicks a link and it does not work. There are hundreds of places you can go on the internet that will check your link validity. Use them.
6. Make sure your META TAGS are done right. Learn how to do this here.
7. Submit your site to as many privately run Link Directories/Search Engines as you can find. These will not generally boost your traffic in any major way but will help to maintain steady stream of qualified visitors.

OK, I DID EVERYTHING YOU SAY ON THIS PAGE BUT MY SITE STILL DOES NOT SHOW ON GOOGLE, YAHOO ETC. WHY NOT!!??

No one knows exactly how many sites there are on the whole of the internet but there are millions! And thousands more are being added every day! Let's say, you make worship dance banners/flags. A search on Google showed the following results:

The chances of your brand new website featuring anywhere in the list for the keyword "banner" are infinitesimally small - that means you have NO CHANCE of your site featuring anywhere near the top in a search.

OK, great. So how do you get your site to show on Google?

Firstly, don't try to compete with a keyword "banner" - as one in 55,000,000, you don't stand a chance.
*

Think "phrases" instead of "words". Look at the table above; as you add more words to the search, you get less results. If your page(s) contain the words "canvass creative banners and flags worship dance" in a sentence like this for example:

Our canvass banners and flags are creative in their design and are ideal for use in Worship dance"

Remember, a search engine cannot read pictures on your site. Even if they are very descriptive. Your text must say it all. Search engines index text.

Your page rank is critical. The site that ranks #1 on Google for "banner" has a very high page rank and that's why it is #1. Page rank is a VAST subject and it is not possible to cover it in any detail in a few paragraphs. If you want to know more about Page Rank, here are some handy links:

So how much page rank is good and how much is bad?

Basically, the higher your page rank is, the more the search engines will favor the text on your site when people search them for those words. (It's actually a lot more than just that but for the purposes of this example, it's close enough). Obviously, you should have as high a page rank on your site as possible with 10 being the highest you get. Generally, anything above a 3 or a 4 is considered good. A page rank above 6 is very good and 7 or 8 is exceptional.

It is important to understand that page rank is NOT linear but logarithmic. (Actually only Google knows the real formula as it is a closely guarded secret). It works something like this:

From the above, you can see that there is a vast difference between page rank 3 and 4 or between 4 and 5. As your site moves up in rank, so the competition becomes more fierce. For example, if you have a page rank of 6 you may be one of the top 100,000 sites. To get to a rank of 7, you need to be one of the top 10,000 sites. To have a page rank of 8 would mean you are one of the top 1,000 sites (in the whole world remember) - a huge difference.

How to get traffic to your site the right way

The image is neat because it makes the site stand out in the Bookmarks no?

Some cool browsers - like firefox - also support this tag in the section:

This allows you to use an animated gif -- called favicon.gif in this case -- to replace the static favicon.ico

Here's how you do it (for a static .ico file):

* Make an image of 16 * 16 pixels.
* Save it as an ICON file (.ico) extension with the name favicon.ico in the root folder of your Website. (The folder with your index.html file)
* Done. It's that simple.
* To also allow browsers that support animated gifs, add the following line to the section of your HTML:
and, of course, make the gif file and place it
in the root folder of your site.

When someone bookmarks your site, the Browser looks for a file called http://YourSite.com/favicon.ico. If it finds a file it uses your file instead of it's default file.

There is lots of software out there that can save gif or JPEG images as an .ico file. A good free one is Irfanview.

AUTOMATED SUBMISSION SOFTWARE AND "WE SUBMIT TO 1,000,000 SEARCH ENGINES FOR $25" COMPANIES

In our experience, it's generally not a good idea to use them -- some are good but many are out to simply make a quick buck and couldn't care two hoots about you or your website.

There is a simple reason why these "automated" and paid options don't work - Category Targeting.

Put very simply, Category Targeting is all about submitting your site to the right categories in the right search engines and directories.

For example, say you have a site on Corvettes. At one search engine, they may only have a category for Cars. However, at another one, there may be a sub-category from cars called Sports Cars. Only you would know to submit your site to the Sports Cars category -- automated software or someone else would simply bang it into cars and sports car enthusiasts would never see you link let alone click on it!

Another example would be the description you give your site in one place may be entirely different to the one you choose in another.

For example, on a Teen Centered link engine you may use words like funky, neato, boss, ppl, cu, l8r, 4u, and so on to describe your site because it's part of the language teens use. On an O-So-Serious search engine catering mostly for retired folk you would not dare use these words because no one would understand you! :) Automated software simply cannot do this!

There is absolutely no benefit if your site is in 1,000,000 search engines but no one clicks anyway. It must say the right stuff and it must be in the right category. As the person who creates the site only you have the knowledge to do this right. Don't waste your money on automated software submission software. It doesn't work.

BUY TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE

There are thousands of sites out there that will sell you hits to your website. The big ones you may know are Google, AltaVista, Overture etc. However, these are mostly overpriced as they work on a bidding system where you bid against others on keywords. For example, if you type "Christian Web Hosting" on Google you get all those links on the right and the top. These are paid advertising links. Every time you click a link, the advertiser pays ... up to $50.00 for a click! I don't know about you but I certainly won't pay that kind of money for a click. The more "valuable" the word or phrase, the more you have to bid in order to get your site near the top. Crazy huh?

Then you get the smaller advertisers. These are usually small companies or individuals that run some kind of paid advertising scheme. In my opinion, this is where you will get the best value for money. But beware, some are good and some are outright crooks! Be very careful!

Examples of this kind of advertising include those who sell you paid niche market indices, pop-under ads, pop-up ads, pay per click ads, banner adds and redirected traffic. From experience, we have found only some of them are worth it. The rest are dodgy investments at best.

niche market indices

There are several Christian sites -- big and small -- offering this kind of advertising for a price. Shop around to find the best one for you. They come in two flavors:

*

Pay per click
*

Pay per month/year etc. (Recommended if the site has qualified traffic and enough hits).

Pay per month is obviously much easier to budget for as your cost is fixed but it will depend on how much traffic a site gets. You may find the one better than the other. It's very much a trial and error thing and you have to try it for a month with a given advertiser to see which works best. We offer this type of [button/banner] advertising on some of our high traffic sites here.

This kind of advertising, although it can be a little more expensive, if often the best since you will be drawing your visitors from a source that is related to your site. For example, advertising your yacht business from a banner on a large yachting message board will guarantee your visitors are mostly yacht enthusiasts.

pop-under and pop-up advertising

The name is exactly what it sounds like. The first one hides the popped-up page behind your current browser window and the second is a more "in your face" approach where the popped-up page is on top. Many people use pop-up killers these days and the trend is for more and more people to use software that blocks them. It's a good form of advertising and the cheapest but shop around to find the best one for you and read the general warning below.

redirected traffic

A relatively new development is redirected traffic reselling. How it works is that people buy up old domain names -- sometimes by the thousands. These are all kinds of domains. For example, companies that went bust, old websites that were abandon by the original owners etc etc. These domains still get traffic simply because they are listed in the search engines and they come up from time to time when people search for certain words.

You go to a company or individual who bought a whole bunch of these domains and they set them up to redirect the traffic that would have gone to the old domain to your site instead. In principle this is a great idea but in practice it's a failure. Don't buy this kind of traffic.

Why not? You ask. Simple - you have no idea what kind of traffic is being sent you you. Let's say you have a site which sells second hand antique furniture. What value would traffic intended for a manufacturing company specializing in the manufacture of rocket fuel have for you? No matter how many rocket fuel visitors you get, it is highly unlikely any would be interested in your furniture. Traffic must be targeted if it is to be of value.

General Warning: Regardless of which type of traffic you buy, be very careful of who you buy from. There are several companies and individuals out there who will send you thousands of unique IP address hits to your site (which you can verify in your logs), but no one will ever see your page/s! There are several techniques for doing this and you could land up being scammed. (Some of the techniques involve things like opening your whole page in a 1 * 1 pixel window for example. You get the unique hit but no one saw your page ... not unless they had x-ray vision like superman!)

What works best?

It depends on several factors -- your site, the sellers site and many more. Fixed text link and fixed banner advertising are always the best. Why do I say that? Two reasons:

*

Because you are not only getting the traffic from the sellers site but you are also getting a fixed link from the sellers site. This will boost your ranking in all the major search engines and will do so for as long as your link/banner is on the sellers site. If the seller's site is highly ranked in the search engines, your site will benefit greatly! Read what Google has to say about this here.
*

Provided you have some means of knowing how much traffic the page gets your banner/link is on it is also the safest form of advertising -- you can go to the sellers site anytime to see your link or banner. With any of the other methods, you have no guarantees at all that anyone even went to your site.

Bottom line: You get what you pay for. If someone is offering you 100,000 hits for $25.00, think carefully before you spend your money because that is a price that is way too low and it might just be a scam. For pop-up/pop-under advertising expect to pay around $0.01 to $0.10 per page view and for banner advertising in the same order for monthly advertising and $0.20 and up for click through advertising.

RECIPROCAL LINKS

You put a link on your site to mine and I'll put one on my site to yours. Sounds fair doesn't it? Ha! but there's a catch!!

What if you are an honest Joe like me and believe the person on the other side is honest and you do your bit by adding the link to the other guys site but ... back at the ranch ...

1. S/he never adds the reciprocal link back to you. You've been had!
OR
2. S/he sends you and email saying "here's the page with your link ..." but the page with your link is not linked from anywhere else on this person's site! You get it? Your link is on the other site but the page it is on can never be found on that site ... you've been scammed!
OR
3. S/he waits for 2 weeks then removes your link but you still link to him/her. Scammed again!

Reciprocal links are great and work very well because of the way search engines rank sites. However, they open to abuse. Use with caution.

HOW OFTEN TO SUBMIT

Once you have submitted your site to a search engine be sure you find out from the FAQ's listed (sometimes) on that particular Search engines site, as to how it works. For example:

* Some search engines will automatically drop your listing after a preset time. Others won't.
* Some search engines will penalize (even permanently 'ban' your site) if you re-submit it too often.

Bottom Line - make sure you find out these things about the search engine you are submitting to and then comply with their rules.

WHERE NOT TO SUBMIT TO

Be aware and focused on who your target audience is. If you have a site on the merits of paper recycling you are far more likely to find a receptive audience with the earth lovers than with the trucking union!

Be selective of where you submit your site to. For example, don't submit your Windows MS Access site to a MYSQL forum. All you will get is a lot of rude replies telling you how lame Access is! Often Website owners neglect to take this very important aspect into consideration - you are likely to do more harm than good to yourself and your website by submitting it to inappropriate places.

GRAMMAR/SPELLING

Makwgh shwkefr yokep spkllpf corrgprtly!! A page full of obvious typos won't get you far. With all the spell checkers out there these days, there is no excuse for poor spelling. But spelling is only one part of the problem. The other major part is grammar. Carefully read the two sentences below. Both are identical except for the placement of a single comma:

Here lies my dearly departed Martha. In heaven is she, not in hell, this I know well.

Here lies my dearly departed Martha. In heaven is she not, in hell, this I know well.

While on the subject of spelling and grammar, don't forget that English is not spelt (or spoken) the same all over the world. There is a vast difference between American English and British English spelling for example. It is not really important which spelling you decide to go with provided you are consistent.

Always keep in mind your intended audience when adding text. For example, the word 'Ketchup' is a common word in America but someone in South Africa won't know what that is because they call it 'Tomato Sauce'. There are hundreds of words and phrases we take for granted that either mean something completely different to someone from another part of the world or has no meaning at all.

SENTENCE STRUCTURE

Search engines are mathematical marvels that read the text on your site and combine it (not all of them) with your META TAGS. Some even integrate other HTML tags like the

,

tags. Have you ever wondered how when you search for something the Search engines actually find it?

You have a website about boats. You want to say this

"Buy our boats because they are the best in the West"

Not a bad start. But you won't get many point in search engine terms for your choice of words. a better way would be to be a little more verbose and use words that people will likely be typing into the search Engines. I don't know much about boats, but something along the lines of the following would be better (assuming it was true of course)

"Shipley boats are delivered by helicopter to your doorstep. Pre-fueled and ready for ocean faring adventure immediately. Manufactured from highest quality Titanium, extracted from mines deep in Siberia. Shipley boats assures you of a consistently high level of cruising comfort all year round."

Do you get the point? Here's what the search engine "sees":

*

"Shipley boats" - your company name, appears several times. Telling the engine it's important,
*

You have used words like delivered, helicopter, pre-fueled ocean faring etc. All these words are potential terms someone using a search engine looking for boats may be using. Use them liberally, they will maximize your chances of being found.

DREADED DEAD LINKS

Dead links are mentioned in the introduction. However, they are so important we feel they warrant another mention. Avoid them at all costs! Dead links tell your visitor the following:

* You are not really interested in the website [so why should s/he be?]
* You don't know what you are doing [so if you are selling something, why should s/he believe you?]
* You never update your site [so he's reading old news]

THE LOOK AND FEEL OF YOUR SITE

Someone once said: "Don't reinvent the wheel!"

This is just as true for websites. Unless you are sure you have a relatively sophisticated audience DON'T use different colors for links. DON'T put stuff on pages where people won't find it.

A good rule of thumb: Go to the big Search engines - Google, AltaVista, Yahoo - and look at how they have laid out their pages. Look especially at the following:

* The colors they use for text, hyperlinks etc.
* The placement of the navigation links on their pages.

Bottom line - Everyone has been to Google or Yahoo or AltaVista. If your visitors are likely to be 'Internet novices' by all means make your site mimic these sites. This way, you will be sure your visitors will feel 'at home' on your site.

SPAM

Whatever you do, DON'T SPAM. Some people think Spamming is only when you send porn or Viagra adverts to someone by email. This couldn't be further from the truth. Spamming is any unsolicited email. If you don't have permission to send someone an email and you send an email it is SPAM. Plain and simple.

If you get accused of spam, not only will your web-host close you down, you most likely will find it hard to find another hosting company willing to host your site. Don't spam. It's not worth it. Click here for more.

LOOK FOR CLUES ON OTHER SITES

Use the search engines and visit other websites with similar themes to yours to get ideas of what do do. Often, just navigating someone else's site will give you a lot of inspiration.

NOTE: Do NOT take images from someone else's site or copy chunks of text to paste into your own. See that little Copyright © thingy at the bottom? That means "Copyright" ... not "Copy-rite". You can get yourself into a whole lot of trouble if you use text and/or images from someone else's website without permission. Always ask. Most webmasters will be flattered and have no problem if you do.

IMAGES AND FLASH

Call me old fashioned if you want but I loath FLASH. It takes a whole lot of time to load, hogs precious bandwidth and doesn't add anything to the site. Some people love it but many avoid Flash pages like the plague. If you do use it, some people won't go past your welcome page. (Obviously there are exceptions to this. For example, if you have a graphics design site, because people have come for the graphics. A Flash intro might 'sell' your abilities very well).

If you have pictures, don't have massive pages with zillions of big images. This is a sure turn off for any visitor. Thumbnail the images in something like a table and have hyperlinks to each image on a separate page.

Also, Search Engines cannot read flash or Graphical images so even though your Flash may say a whole lot, it says a whole lot of nothing to the Search Engine.

NOTE, it's far more work to have the thumbnail images link link to HTML pages with the large images than to just link to the images directly but there is a payoff if you use the longer method: If you put each image on a separate HTML page, you can add Titles, text and META TAGS to the HTML pages. You can't to this if you are simply linking to an image file. This gives you more credibility with the search engines and therefore a higher ranking. If you select your META TAGS carefully, you can achieve hugely improved search engine results.

JAVA/JAVASCRIPT

Many webmasters love Java scripts. It is true you can do a lot with Java and make some really interesting pages. BUT there are some things you need to be aware of:

* Many Internet surfers disable Java in their Browsers. Some intentionally, some because they don't know. The reasons aren't very important but the fact is around 22% of all people surfing the Internet have Java disabled for one or other reason.
* Different Browsers (Netscape, MSIE, Opera etc) need slightly different Java commands or they give errors. If your pages only work with Microsoft Browsers of a specific version you automatically exclude all the others. This makes for a direct reduction in your traffic to your site.
* Search Engines do not follow Java Links. If you use them only link to pages that are not important for Search Engine placement.

If you must use Java, make sure you test it on all the Browsers you can lay your hands on to be sure your visitors won't get error messages which will surely make them click off your site.

BANNERS AND POP-UPS

Been to one of those sites where a zillion pop-ups suddenly jump at you as soon as the site opens? Every time you close one, another 5 appear? They are terrible! Don't do it on your site. Nowadays you get popup as well as 'pop-under' advertising. Frankly, I'm not sure which is worse.

Very few sites that employ this method of advertising get a lot of traffic simply because popup banners are so annoying.

Bottom line - No one like popup advertising. Avoid using them. The couple of $$ you will be paid by the company you advertise just isn't worth the loss of traffic. Don't use them.

GET YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME

Having your own domain name is very important for two reasons:

* Many of the search engines will not list sites that are not 'primary' e.g. http://domain.com
* A domain name like http://someplace.com/thisdirecory/thatdirectory/index.htm hard to remember. If your visitor liked your page and wants to come back but did not bookmark you, s/he probably wont be able to find your site again.

We did an experiment some 12 months ago to prove this. Here's what we did:

* We created two identical 2-page websites.
* The one website we put up at geocities (free website). The other we put on it's own domain.
* We submitted both to exactly the same search engines.

The result?

After 6 months, the geocities page had 547 hits and the one that had it's own domain had 5,200 - almost 10 times more! Having your own domain does make a big difference!

'CHRISMAS' TREE SITES

We call them 'Christmas tree' sites. You've seen them. The ones where the owner has found every possible banner, logo, Webring and award s/he could find and put them all on his/her site. They are absolutely ghastly! Don't do it! It makes it look like:

1. You have nothing to say, so you filled your page with every bit of Internet junk you could find,
2. The site is so unpopular you have resorted to desperate measures to get traffic.

Banner Exchanges, Site Awards and the like all have their place. However, it is the experience of the author that they generally don't provide what they promise - traffic. Most banner exchanges work on a 2:1 ratio. That is, for every 2 times someone else's banner is displayed on your page, your banner will be displayed on someone else's page. Now ask yourself this. When last did you click on a banner on someone else's website? For most people the answer is either "a year ago" or "never". Contrary to popular belief, banners Exchanges don't generally work if you want to build a really prime site.

PUTTING DOWN YOUR COMPETITION

Although comparative advertising is acceptable in many parts of the world it is not necessarily the best way or even a good way to advertise your site. Consider the following a line advert on a web hosting site:

"Don't use xyz hosting because they give poor service and we give great service"

Firstly, a comment like this is in poor taste and won't help getting you new hosting customers. In fact, people are more likely to be put off by your callous remark about your competition. Not only that, "xyz hosting" - who may be 10 times bigger than your company and might just decide to reciprocate the favor by making a similar comment about you! Putting down your competition is never a smart way to get business.

There are of course exceptions. For example, if you run a web hosting review site you could say something like this:

"Many of our members have reported poor after sales service from xyz hosting"

This is an entirely different ball game - as a web review site you are expected to write reviews about other web hosting companies. A negative comment about another company is acceptable because in this context it is regarded as information and not putting down.
